Hyperlactation or Oversupply Syndrome, something you don't hear a lot about. When in comes to breastfeeding we often hear about low supply, but what about an OVER supply... yes this is a thing and no, it's not a good problem to have.
Some nursing parents do experience a mass overproduction of milk, this can pose a number of different problems for both baby and parent. The body's milk production system is a feedback loop and can influenced by a number of different factors, including but not limited to:
An imbalance of Hormones: milk production is stimulated by a number of hormones including prolactin if there is an imbalance in these hormones it could leave to an excessive production of milk
Excess Demand for Milk: as stated earlier the milk production system is a feedback loop and responds on a supply and demand basis, so if baby is nursing more frequently that will stimulate the body to produce more milk.
The number of Alveoli Glands: some people have more alveolar glands than others. Alveolar glands are the glands responsible for storing and secreting milk.
Overuse of Galactagogue: galactagogues are foods or medicines that help increase breast milk supply, some examples of galactagogues are: Fenugreek, Brewer's Yeast, Blessed Thistle (consult with a lactation consultant before taking these Galactagogues
Signs of Hyperlacation/Oversupply
Feeling extremely full and heavy breasts
Engorgement
Breasts are still firm even after a feeding session
Very leaky breasts / wet feeding bras
Forceful let-down / squirting milk; this can cause baby to choke and pull away from the breast or use their gums to clamp down on the nipple to stop the milk flow.
If you suspect that you have Hyperlactation/Oversupply syndrome, it is best to consult a lactation consultant who can give you some tips and tricks to help with the oversupply.
Some people who suffer from Hyperlactation/Oversupply Syndrome are able to pump off the extra milk and donate it, check to see if there is a local Human Milk Donation centre near you!
